Shooooooosh. *pats head*
I’ve been watching for a good long while. Started watching at the end of 2010/beginning of 2011. I was there for a lot of early stuff even though I didn’t take part of the community. I even remember the McKongs in the old old minecraft server, plus the start of jokes like “Stupid Aquaman” (ilu Enter) and the “Crouch Rooms”. I remember Ben leaving for college. I watched Heavy Rain live and pleaded for Fraser not to end an episode when he did alongside Becky and Ben. And I went Turbo in the summer of 2012 (which reminds me, I need to re-donate)
Fraser has often said they play caricatures of themselves as huge assholes on the show. I’m not going to defend him one hundred percent. Because, yes he has said a couple of shitty things as jokes, but not like what big name gamers have said recently.
Nothing is this complete black and white morality that Tumblr loves to promote (third time I’ve had to say that in a 48 hour period). And you can also enjoy shows and content that can be problematic at times. But I will argue that VGA isn’t that bad. Especially compared to other groups on the internet. Plus Fraser has tried really hard to make the VGA community safe for everyone.
When push comes to shove Fraser and the rest of VGA have fought to make people feel safe. They deal with problems very quickly and shut things down. I’m not a mod or a com, so I don’t know how the process works or who’s involved. But from the perspective as a user, it looks like they deal with things almost instantly. Not to mention they were one of the first shows to have a no rape jokes rule for both cast and chat. That was pretty big a couple of years ago when I first found out about them.
I don’t know if you kept watching the MGS V trailer or if it was a later show but all of the cast said that the character design of Quiet is going too far. Not to mention how disgusted he felt while playing that $20 demo of MGS V and how it treated the woman with a bomb in her uterus.
Yeah, the show does show objectified female characters and they do enjoy them sometimes. A lot of it feels like parody and other times it feels like this character is sexualized but still an awesome character. A good example is Bayonetta. I haven’t played the games, but I’ve seen good arguments for and against it and it comes down to that the character has agency.
I’m also going to point out that when they did play Dragons Crown, all the men cosplayed as the sorceress as a way to make fun of the design.
They’ve also been pretty good about enjoying sexualized men as well in the show. Like I said, most of it is parody. Fraser is the King Troll on the show.
If you don’t, you need to watch his vlogs. Where he does talk about critique and discussion and the need to make the industry better. He is all about that. And from what I’ve heard of people who have gotten to hang out with him at Pax is that he loves discussion about this stuff. He’s friends/acquaintance with/has restraining order filled against by Tim Schafer. You don’t get where Fraser, Becky, and VGA is at by acting like a fuckbag, such as Jontron and PdP. Fraser also holds himself up to a higher standard and tries really hard not to be like them.
Does that excuse some of the stuff he’s said, no. But unlike JT and PdP, his jokes are not ways to insult. Nor do they come from a place of hatred like the people said above do. And lets be honest here, when half of the human population are women and the majority of gamers are women, being that big of a dick is straight up hatred and not acceptable.
I critique Fraser and VGA because I respect him and love the show and community. I have met some pretty amazing people through it and owe Fraser and VGA a lot. As a fan and Turbo I want to help the show with discussions in the future, for the same reasons I want games to be better. Everyone should feel safe while playing games, they’re there for us to experience new things and to escape.
Fraser, Becky, and VGA are awesome. Our community is awesome, but we can always strive to be better too. At the same time, I can always do better as well. If I hold up shows or groups of people to a higher standard, then I should also hold my self to the same level or higher.
P.S. Please don’t insult Becky, she’s super cool and I feel like the show wouldn’t be the same with out her.

At this point, pretty sure anybody who’d still call themselves a JT fan deserves to get called a dick.
What do you have against Justin Timberlake? Dude brought sexy back single-handedly.
